Referral Program The School Board approved a program that gives an incentive for recruiting new families for our school. If a family who has children enrolled refers a new family to Salem, they will receive a $200 tuition credit at Christmas per family they have referred. A church family who refers a new family will receive a $200 script gift card also at Christmas per family if they so choose. There is no limit to the number of families you can refer. If you have any more questions about the program, speak to a School Board member or Mr. Klatt. Registration for Next School Year Returning school families' enrollment will open for the 2020-2021 school year on January 6th. Look for a re-enrollment email from TADS that first week back from the break to make your re-enrollment process easier. Registration fees for next year went up for PreK-8. The preschool’s registration fee is now $100 before March 1st and $175 after. K-8 registration fee is $175 before March 1st and $275 a

 Please don't forget to make some baked goods and bring them in to help out our bake sale on Wednesday before and after the Christmas Service on 12/18. The cart to collect goodies will be out by the school door on Monday morning. You can bring treats in at any time before the service on Wednesday. Proceeds will go towards the bleacher fund. Don't forget the children's Christmas service is Wednesday the 18th at 6pm. Please have your children here by 5:30 if playing in the preservice and 5:45 for all other students. As a special Christmas treat for the kids, the pizza for lunch on Friday will be Pizza Hut pizza!! Please have them preorder with their teacher by Wednesday, their choices are pepperoni, italian sausage, hawaiian or cheese.

Did you love last year's "Adult Night Out"?  Come help us plan this year's party to be even more fun!  If you didn't make it to last year's party, then come help us plan this year's event.  We are having a planning/brainstorming meeting on Monday, December 16 @6:30-7:30 pm.  Attending our planning meeting does not commit you to the event!  We just need lots of ideas and lots of hands to make this year's night out extraordinary!!!  If you would like to help and cannot attend this meeting, you can contact Julie Ross or Tina Thompson or the school office.  All ideas, All people are welcome!!!

Advent Services Begin Advent Season is upon us. This is the time where we prepare for the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus into the world. We have services on December 4th and 11th at 4pm and 7pm with dinner in between. Please make plans to attend to hear the wonderful news of the coming of our Savior. Jump Up Day Our annual Jump Up Day will be this Friday, December 6th. For the morning, students get to “jump up” to the classroom they will be in next year. This allows them to get to know who their teacher will be and hopefully put to rest some of the nerves they may have as they get closer to the end of the year. Crusader for a Day The 8th-grade students have the opportunity to go to St. Croix Friday, December 6th. This will give them a taste of high school life and a chance to see what St. Croix has to offer. Many of our students attend St. Croix, but even if the students don’t, it is a great opportunity for them to see what high school life is like.

Just a reminder that the next Salem Parent Teacher Meeting is this Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6:30 pm.

Advent is a time for us to prepare our hearts for Jesus’ coming. We want our focus to be on Jesus throughout this season, but all too often it seems we get caught up with the preparations in our homes, churches or communities. Advent by Candlelight is an opportunity for women to set aside all of those preparations and focus our hearts and minds again on Jesus.  It is a beautiful afternoon filled with Scripture readings, narration, prayer, songs of praise and Christian fellowship.  Please join us on Saturday, November 30 at 12:00 pm. We will begin with lunch followed by a program and music.  Everyone school age & older are invited to attend.  Please sign-up on the sheet in the narthex before November 26 (or call/email the school office 651-439-7831 school.office@salemlutheran.org).

Our middle school students recently finished the second round of the Martin Luther College Meet Math competition. Students worked on six competition level math problems. Our Salem fifth and sixth-grade students are in the B-5 category, and our seventh and eighth-grade students are in the A-6 category. Categories are determined by school size. Other test dates this school year are the weeks of  January 13 and February 24. Meet Math is a service club at Martin Luther College that provides mathematics contests for students in grades 5-12 who are enrolled in WELS or ELS schools. This club also maintains school and individual statistics that are the basis for various awards presented at the end of the school year. Tomorrow during the three Salem basketball games, we will be having a fundraiser for the new bleachers in our gym. The fundraiser will take place at halftime of each game. The rules for the game will be explained tomorrow, but it will only be a dollar to play. Prizes include free bags of popcorn, free candy bars, or a gift card to local restaurants. Bring some singles and a fun attitude. Excited to see you all there!

Do you enjoy photography or making family photo albums? Salem School creates a yearly school yearbook. The book is created online so you can help create as God gives you the opportunity. We would love to have your help. Please contact Mrs. Brohn or the school office if you are interested.

BoxTops for Education is changing to an easier format. There are still a few box top coupons on products that can be cut and sent into our school. Please make sure these have a date that has not expired. Most products, however, will now have a new label that says "No More clipping - Scan your receipt". Please do not clip and send us these labels . Instead, you will be able to download the BoxTops app and take a picture of your purchase receipt. This will keep track of our school points much easier! Using the BoxTops app is very easy. You will have to create a login using your email address, find our school (be sure its  Salem Lutheran in Stillwater, MN!! ) and that's it!  From here on out we will have to submit the Boxtops through the app within several days of purchasing an eligible item.  As soon as you get in the car or unload those groceries, just quick snap a picture of the receipt through the BoxTop app and you are done! The 8th-grade class is planning to travel at the end of the school year for their class trip. They will be organizing several fundraisers to help them. Butter Braids are a huge treat for all who have ordered in the past so we hope to keep the tradition going and benefit the 8th graders too. This past Saturday fourteen of our Salem students from grades 5-8 participated in the Public Speaking Festival at St. Croix Academy in West St. Paul. They presented their selection from a category (storytelling, humorous reading, serious prose, serious poetry or speech) three times before peers and judges. God's blessings and safe travels to our teachers who will be traveling to Mankato for the WELS Teachers Conference. Please note there is no school because of this on Thursday and Friday. Tonight is K-8 Parent/Teacher conferences from 4:00 - 7:00 pm. Grade K-4 please contact your child's teacher if you do not have a scheduled conference and need to schedule one. Grade 5-8 teachers will be in the school lunchroom during that time frame and no scheduled conference is needed. Just drop in to speak with them. This Wednesday, Oct. 16 -  Our students will be allowed to wear a cap/hat for Caps for Kids Day when they bring a $1 donation to school. On October 14th all Salem Lutheran students will participate in Caps for Kids to benefit children who are battling cancer.  Students can bring $1.00 to give to their teacher and then they can wear a hat all day at school.

At our 20 week ultrasound, Adam and I discovered that our daughter had a severe birth defect called a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH).  She was missing over two-thirds of her diaphragm, and some of her internal organs had moved into her chest cavity, restricting the growth of her lungs and placing stress on her heart. Evangeline was born on March 5, 2019. A team of specialists from Children’s Minnesota, including a neonatologist, neonatal nurse practitioners, nurses and respiratory therapists, was present at the delivery. They immediately placed her on a breathing tube, inserted IVs and stabilized her on a ventilator before transporting her to the NICU.  After three weeks Evangeline successfully underwent surgery in order to repair the hernia. It’s almost time for basketball season to start! Salem is planning on having a Girl’s A and B team and a Boy’s B-team. The league schedule is still changing while schools finalize their numbers and teams, but you can plan on Friday evening games starting November 8th. The girls will be coached by Jeff Ross and Tess Anderson and will practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-9:00am. Boys will coached by Travis Koester and Neal Anderson and practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-5:45pm.  Practices will start on October 22nd for the boys and the 24th for the girls. The coaches will have an informational meeting about what to expect during the season on Tuesday, October 15th at 6pm in Mr. Klatt’s classroom.

A Message from Meghan Bicek: Please, everyone, dig through your pantry and fridge for all those BoxTops and submit them prior to October 20th!  BoxTops for Education is switching to an easier format and we will have until the end of the month to submit the paper or clip out BoxTops that everyone has saved and dropped off at school. Once you have submitted those, it's time to download the BoxTops for Education app on your smartphone.  You will have to create a login using your email address, find our school (be sure its Salem Lutheran in Stillwater, MN!! ), and that's it!  From here on out we will have to submit the Boxtops through the app within several days of purchasing an eligible item.  As soon as you get in the car or unload those groceries, just quick snap a picture of the receipt through the BoxTop app and you are done!  It seems like a bit of a pain but once you get used to it, it will be a much easier process.

The first meeting of the Chess Club will take place on Friday, October 4th from 7:45 - 8:30 am. Students should enter through the south entrance to the school (by the dumpsters) and meet in Mr. Klatt's room.  Mr. Klatt and George Light will be teaching the students how the pieces move and basic strategy for chess We will have another meeting on October 11th to make up for missing a meeting in September. The Chess Club will meet on the 2nd Friday of each month after October.

Our next Basic Bible Christianity class will begin on Wednesday, October 23rd, at 7 pm. In this class we'll review the basic teachings of the Bible so we can find a solid foundation on God's Word. Everyone is invited to attend. It's a great introduction to God's Word if you've never studied it before. It's also a good way to review God's Word if you haven't been able to read or study it lately. We also ask those who are interested in becoming members of Salem to take this class.   October 2019 Good and Pleasant What a privilege to spend time with our brothers and sisters in faith, wherever that happens. This month I was invited to preach at Bloomington-Living Hope Lutheran Church in the Twin Cities area. I also was able to talk about Costa Maya Ministries at the school and at West Lutheran High School. One of the highlights was giving a presentation on our mission at the church picnic during halftime of the Packers-Vikings game. (Fortunately, I grew up in Houston so was able to avoid getting on anyone’s bad side!) From the questions of children, to those who hosted me, and the many who prayed for our mission and spontaneously offered to help in all different ways, I could see without a doubt the blessing of working together as Christians in ministry.  How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity (Psalm 133:1) , especially when we’re united to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.  ~Pastor Valleskey ************

We're scheduling conferences to be held on Tuesday, October 8, Thursday, October 10, and Monday, October 14 for all K-8 students. Parent-teacher conferences offer an opportunity for parents/caregivers and teachers to speak with each other about issues affecting their children, like student achievement, work habits, and progress. Parents/caregivers can help make this a productive time by bringing questions, concerns, or suggestions to the meeting. We recommend that both parents/caregivers attend the conference if possible. Our first quarter ends on Friday, October 25. Report cards for all students will be sent home on Wednesday, October 30. Each of these conferences will be 15 minutes in length. Should more time be needed, please make other arrangements with the teacher.   Fire Prevention Day On October 2nd, our K-2 students will have the opportunity to talk with Fire Fighters about how to be safe if there is a fire. They will talk about what to do when the smoke alarm goes off and how to be safe exiting a building. We look forward to all that the students will learn to keep them safe in case of a fire. We have over 140 grandparents/guests attending our school this Friday! Please remember that school will be dismissed after lunch that day. Students not staying for lunch may leave with their guest or can be picked up at 11:30 pm. For all that are staying for lunch the day will end at or near 12:30 pm.

Thank you for all of your donations for the American heart association.   It was great to see how happy the students were to hand in their envelopes and get their prize.  Our school goal was to raise $1000.00. The students of Salem Lutheran school met their goal by raising $1495.00!  Wow great work!  This donation will go to help those with heart problems.  Thank you.

Top Ten Science Questions of the Bible Come to a special presentation, The Top Ten Science Questions of the Bible, by Dr. Kevin Peil on Sunday, September 22 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the SCL chapel. Dr. Peil holds PhD in chemical engineering and has worked as a research scientist for Dow Chemical Company for the last 29 years. He has presented numerous times on a wide variety of topics related to science and the Bible at conferences around the United States. The presentation is free and open to the public.
