April Message from the Principal

From the Principal’s Desk April 2018                                                                 Death and Taxes Did you have a good spring break this year? I did. My family got to visit relatives we haven’t seen for almost a year. Having time off also helps to “recharge” ourselves so that we can be more energetic in our work and have a positive spirit. Spring break also brought me some sobering thoughts - taxes. I hadn’t started to compile all the necessary information for me to file my taxes for 2017 and the thought of doing this work took away some of the joy. It reminded me of something Benjamin Franklin wrote after signing the new United States of America Constitution, “Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”  You have probably heard this quote or one of its variations.  We all will die.  We all pay taxes. No ifs, ands, or buts - these two things

School  Newsletter, April 2018 Enrollment -  This year we have 79 students K-8 and 50 students in our preschool for a total of 129 students.  Currently enrolled for the 2018-2019 school year we have 42 preschool students (maximum we can have is 60) and 74 students in grades K-8. They will be visiting our school and meeting as many of us as they can the morning of Tuesday, April 3 . Parents will have the opportunity to greet Mr. Klatt by the school office from 8:30 am - 9:20 am and Mrs. Klatt will also be by Mrs. Grobe's room to meet any parents at that same time. A Note From Mrs. Grobe

Preschool enrollment for 2018-2019 is nearing the current enrollment for this year. However, we have room for 10 additional students in the coming year. Continue to spread the word about our great program and encourage people to enroll now so they don’t miss out. Encourage them to schedule a tour now or ask for information to be sent to them. Word of mouth is our best advertisement.

Update on Stillwater School Board's Proposed Change of Start Times

This is an update on Stillwater School Board’s proposal to change school start times in 2019-2020. The Stillwater School Board met last night and one of the topics on the agenda was the proposed changes in starting time to accommodate a later start for the high school students.  This change in start time for the high school would affect the start and end time for Salem students.  In the proposals presented last night, Salem would start school between 9:15 and 9:40 a.m., and end between 3:45 and 4:10 p.m. Jane Grobe and I spoke on how starting later and getting out later would affect our students’ learning and how it would disrupt family schedules. The middle school, where some of our students participate in after-school extra-curricular activities, would have their school day ending at 2:00.  That would mean if students left Salem for after-school activities, they could miss over 2 hours of instruction to be at the start of the middle school activities. The board’s discussion on th

Please plan on attending this meeting if you are available on March 8.  We need your involvement!

Safety Drills

Dear Parents, We wanted to make you aware of the safety drills that we participate in for the safety of our students and staff at Salem. Your student may mention these so we wanted to make you aware of them as well. We will be participating in 2 different types of lockdown drills with your children. The first type of lockdown is called a Lockdown with Warning. This would be used if there is a threat outside of the building. We would remain in our classroom with the doors locked, blinds pulled and no outdoor play with minimal travel in the halls especially by the main doors. We would continue with our schedule as planned without outside movement.  If it would be at the end of the day, we would keep your children safe here at school and not release them until the threat was gone. We would communicate this with parents through email or phone call as needed. The second kind of lockdown drill is a Lockdown with Intruder. We have set protocols to follow which include locking our classr

Final Round of MLC Meet Math Competition Complete

Image
Last week our students in grades 5-8 finished the fourth and final round of the Martin Luther College Meet Math competition. Students are given six questions to complete within a 25-minute time limit. Calculators are allowed for this competition, but they often don't help due to the complexity of the problems. Congrats to all of our students for participating in this rigorous math event. You can see our school and individual student results and rankings by visiting  https://portal.mlc-wels.edu/meetmath/results/view . Our Salem fifth and sixth-grade students are in the B-5 category, and our seventh and eighth-grade students are in the A-4 category. Categories are determined by school size. March Message from the Principal

From the Principal’s Desk March 2018                                                       Who is Your Hero? Do you have a hero?  There has been a lot of publicity on new superhero movies lately.  People like to see a character that can stand up for what is right and defeat the opposition so that others can enjoy being safe.  In a world that seems to have more than an acceptable amount of tragedy and suffering, people look for escapes from reality by enjoying the deeds of their favorite superheroes. Heroes can also be people that have achieved great success.  Many sports stars are favorite heroes.  Just look at who has been elected to a hall of fame and you find examples of heroes that many people admire.  Heroes can be people that have success at something other than athletics.  A person who has worked tirelessly at making a situation better for people is often looked at as a hero.  Someone who has the ability to make personal connections and encourage others to achieve somethi
