Second Half Explosion Leads Saints Past Raiders

In the last game before Christmas break, the Salem Saints traveled to Crown of Life in West St. Paul on Thursday to take on the Raiders.             For not having practice all week, I thought our Saints came out of the gate with solid offensive execution in the first half. Our offensive sets looked fairly sharp, which created many opportunities for us to drive and attack the basket. On the other side of the floor, I was also pleased with our positioning, communication, and awareness in our active 2-3 zone defense. Although we did a good job forcing the Raiders into many outside shots, we struggled to close out many of our defensive possessions in the first half by not boxing out or simply grabbing rebounds and loose balls. With only seven players on their team, I thought Crown of Life gave an excellent first half effort, keeping the game close going into halftime ( halftime score: 20-19 ).             The Salem Saints came out of the locker room looking like a differe

Saints Fall to Pacers on the Road

Our Salem Saints took on the Pilgrim Pacers of Minneapolis last Friday night. Although our Saints came up short ( final score: 33-68 ), the lopsided final score does not truly reflect the high competitive level of this game. The first half was a very physical, back-and-forth thirteen minutes of basketball ( halftime score: 15-30 ). I was pleased with the way our Saints used our God-given athletic abilities to match the speedy Pacers. Unfortunately, much like last week, our opponent blew the doors off in the second half, going up and down their small court at high speeds as our Saints wore down. Even though it got very lopsided towards the end, there were many positives to take away from this game as we focus on snapping this losing streak.     Eighth grader Griffin (14 points) led the Saints by turning in quite a gritty performance. Despite playing through extreme pain throughout the entirety of the second half, Griffin did a great job of slicing into the lane and converting f

Middle School Christmas Gift Exchange

Image
Dear parents of Salem middle school students, In the past, students would exchange names and buy a gift for one another. We won’t be following that practice this year, but instead, we are going to think of those who are in need. In Acts 20:35, St. Paul reminds us that “we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” Our children have so many things to be thankful for, blessings too numerous to count. To help them recognize how blessed they are and demonstrate our love for our Savior this year the class will be donating gifts to the Children’s Hospital. These gifts will be given to families who have children in the hospital this Christmas season. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to show Christian love to others during a difficult time in their lives. Our students decided on purchasing gifts as a group: Playdoh, rattles and teething rings, toy cars, bubbles, nail supplies, and more. Each ch

Saints A Team Basketball Suffer First Loss of Season

In the battle of two teams that share the same home basketball venue, our Salem A Team competed against Christ Lutheran of North St. Paul in an “away” game at our usual home court on Tuesday.             Right from the outset, we knew we were in for a dogfight against the Cougars skilled guards. Unfortunately, the first half was an offensive struggle for our Saints. As we came out shooting ice cold, our Saints continued to settle for too many outside shots, instead of attacking the basket and creating opportunities in the lane. The Cougars did an excellent job of making us uncomfortable on offense by constantly switching up their defensive alignment. While the low scoring first half reflected our offensive inefficiency, it also demonstrated how great of a job we did on the defensive end, which enabled us to keep ourselves within striking distance going into halftime ( halftime score: 8-14 ).             As the second half unfolded, both the speed of the game and scoring

December Message from the Principal

Saints and Angel Hosts Rejoice Luke 2:10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. What makes for a good Christmas? Is it getting the gifts you asked for? Maybe even getting a gift that you have been waiting for? Or maybe you love having family and friends around during Christmastime, or when all the kids are outside and you can finally get some peace and quiet. We all have our thoughts on what makes Christmas the best. The angels had something to share with the shepherds that made their Christmas the best. They told them that Jesus, the long-awaited Savior, was being born in Bethlehem. This may not seem like huge news, but back during those times, the Jews were waiting for the Savior for a long time. This was news that would make it a good Christmas. However, as Jesus grew, the Jews changed what he came here to save us from. They were looking for someone to come and save them from the Romans who had bee

Saints Win Second Straight Home Game

With Thanksgiving break right around the corner, the second regular season game brought the Salem Saints a cornucopia of riches. In our second straight home game, we hosted Trinity Lutheran who made the journey from Belle Plaine, Minnesota. Our Saints exploded out of the gates and never looked back. In the early stages, our defensive aggressiveness propelled us to a big early lead. The top of our 2-3 zone defense, led by eighth graders John (22 points) and Reese (4 points), displayed great anticipation on defense by stealing numerous passes, which led to a countless number of fast break opportunities for our Saints. When Trinity was able to set up their zone defense, I thought our zone offense executed well in the half court with good ball movement. Eighth grader Griffin (10 points) did an excellent job of driving the baseline of Trinity’s zone and opening up passing lanes for easy baskets. Our 27-6 halftime advantage on the scoreboard enabled us get everyone an ample amount of play

Salem Comes Out Victorious in Fast-Paced Home Opener

On Friday night, our Salem A team opened up the 2018-2019 basketball season at home against the King of Grace Knights. After three long weeks of hard practices, our players were extremely excited for Friday night lights in front of the home crowd! Right off the opening tip-off, it was quite evident that the always well-coached Knights from Golden Valley were prepared for a twenty-six minute battle, as they used their size advantage to crash the offensive glass to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first couple minutes. However, after the first five minutes, our Saints adjusted to the speed of the game and seized control. In the latter stages of the first half, our players went on an impressive scoring run that was fueled by a mix of great outside shooting and excellent execution of fast break opportunities on the offensive end. The other key that led to our 18-12 halftime lead was an impressive team effort from our zone defense, which stymied the Knight into long possessions ending

Reformation Celebration a Huge Success

Image
The entire school had fun yesterday learning about Martin Luther while doing various Reformation activities. The students frosted cookies with the Luther Seal on them. They learned what all of the different parts of the seal mean. They built a Wartburg Castle and learned how Martin Luther hid there from those who wanted him dead. They also got the opportunity to "find" Martin Luther who was hidden in the classroom and were challenged to make the Luther Seal out of legos. The students went from classroom to classroom with a mixture of grades Preschool - 8th grade. The cooperation across grade levels and the great interaction among the students were awesome to experience! We are hoping to have other activities throughout the year where the students get to interact and be in those groups again.
