November School News

MAP Testing Salem went through its seasonal MAP testing at the beginning of October. The students were tested on Math, Reading, and Language. The testing is a way for teachers to see where the students are at and how we can better assist them with their learning. Teacher’s Conference The faculty of Salem attended the Minnesota State Teacher’s Conference in October and were able to see many different sectionals about teaching. We had time to reconnect with classmates and other teachers from the area as well as learn best practices for helping our students learn to their fullest potential. Reformation Learning is Fun The entire school had fun on Oct. 31 learning about Martin Luther while doing various Reformation activities. The students frosted cookies with the Luther Seal on them. They learned what all of the different parts of the seal mean. They built a Wartburg Castle and learned how Martin Luther hid there from those who wanted him dead. They also got the opportunity to

Gentle Shepherd Lutheran School—India

Image
Gentle Shepherd Lutheran School now has a covering over their open area. All the children can fit underneath it. This covering is like garden netting which lets the air in, but protects the children and teachers from the hot sun and bugs falling from the trees. The area will give them a better option for having classes outside instead of in the hot cement walled rooms. The temperatures are still in the 90's F, so the area will be well used. Through the end of October, we are gathering gifts to help support Gentle Shepherd school. Our gifts help to make their education possible. If you would like to support this effort, please pick up one of the envelopes in the church entrance or in the school office. Thank you!

Cross Country Meet Results

Image
On a chilly but sunny Wednesday afternoon, four Salem students took on the challenge of a cross country meet in Crystal, MN.  After surveying the new course with Coach Ross, the runners mingled with their enthusiastic fans.  Issac, our only 6th-grade participant, was the first of the group to race and finished his 1 mile run in better time than last year! He had a very solid race and Coach hopes he continues to run and improve his time for the next few years at Salem. Salem's next runner, the first of the 8th graders, was Sophia. After a two year hiatus, Sophia returned to run the 1.5 mile course.  Although she was nervous, Sophia had an excellent time, especially compared to her 5th-grade time. As a bonus, she ran a faster time than her older sister did a few years ago!  The cheering from her older sister and mom must have helped her push to the end. The final race of the day was for the 8th-grade boys, of which Griffin & Reese were competing for Salem.  Griffin was consis

Mission & Ministry Weekend at Salem

Image
Our focus on missions continues this weekend! In our worship, we're going to see how Paul, as challenging as it was, followed Jesus' call to take the gospel to "the ends of the earth." Sometimes it's hard for us to take the good news to the ends of our driveway, but we'll hear how well-equipped we are to share the news about Jesus wherever we are and with whomever we meet. We will watch the new movie,  To the Ends of the Earth , during the Bible study hour downstairs in the Fellowship Hall, and then in our Bible studies for the next few weeks God's Word will equip us to share God's Word wherever we go. We have copies of the movie available after all our services. Please take one and if you can, share it with someone who needs to see it! If you'd like to learn more about the movie, go to https://totheendsoftheearthmovie.com/. Also, please remember that this month we are gathering offerings for Gentle Shepherd Lutheran School in Guntur,

Salem Soccer - game #6 recap

The Salem Saints soccer team felt the woes of having a small team for Thursday's quarterfinal matchup against Good Shepherd of Burnsville.  Going into the day, the number of available team members was only 10, while 11 people are needed to play on the field.  Coach Collins had a feeling this could happen, so with Griffin and Gideon out of town and David's illness lingering, recruitment of teammates was in order on Thursday morning.  Stepping in to fill these big shoes were Tessa, Ellie, McKenna, and Adeline.  These brave young volleyball players brought their court training to the field.  Tessa, Addie, and McKenna, together with Reese and Noah H, were a formidable defense. Reese was a great 8th-grade leader with guidance for all the new players. Our other 8th grader, Zander, played his best game of the season in the net. He made some amazing saves. The powerful goal kicks by Zander & Reese made everyone move way down the field! Our master midfielders, Birk & Eli, we

Parent Social Opportunity Tonight!

Townie Tuesdays is hosting an event at Lift Bridge Brewery tonight to help support Trout in the Classroom from the local Trout Unlimited chapter. Trout in the Classroom was a learning event we used for Science in the upper grades and we found it valuable to the students as well as the environment. Salem will be providing food for the event with all proceeds helping our tuition assistance fund. Trout Unlimited will receive $1 for every pint sold on  Tuesday ,  October 2, from 5-8 p.m . There will also be some silent auction items available to bid on as well as hands-on fly casting where you can learn from the experts. This is an event mostly for adults, but there is root beer available for those who are underage or do not like the adult beverages at the brewery. We are hoping we have a great turn-out as well. Join us for a fun evening! Directions to Lift Bridge Brewery
