Eighth Graders Lead Saints into Overtime Thriller on Parents’ Night

Our outstanding eighth grade basketball players finished out their regular season careers last Friday night against the undefeated Cougars from Cross of Christ. It has long been a tradition at Salem to dedicate the last home game of the season to the parents of the eighth grade class. Parents’ Night always brings lots of emotions, as the eighth grade athletes present their biggest advocates with a flower. Each eighth grader introduced their parents and gave them a heartfelt, personal thank you that was truly awesome! The basketball parents mean so much to the entire athletic program at Salem.     Playing against the top team in our conference, our Saints played perhaps the most inspired game of basketball I have seen in all four of my coaching years at Salem. Led by eighth graders Griffin (18 points) and John (12 points), our Salem Saints went toe-to-toe all night long with a Cross of Christ team that had very good size and skill from multiple players. Getting the opportunity to

2nd Semester Chapel Offering

Image
The children bring money for an offering every Wednesday in our school chapel service. During the second semester, our mission project supports “Grace--Hmong outreach in Vietnam.” We will join with many other schools to gather our offerings. The goal of this special offering is to receive gifts totaling $2 million by June 30, 2019, to fund the land purchase, building construction, and the first two years of operational costs for a pastor training facility in Hanoi, Vietnam. Thank you for supporting this ministry opportunity with your child's Wednesday chapel offering!

Winter Warm up Challenge

Salem Lutheran School will participate in the Power up Winter Warm up challenge from January 28th-February 14th.  Each classroom will track their "active activity" they participated in each day.  As shown below the classroom teacher will keep track if their students are active at recess, an extra activity, and at home.  Then at the end of the three weeks, based on our school-wide percentage Salem Lutheran will earn PowerUp Bucks that can be utilized for gym equipment. So parents help your children remember to stay activity these cold winter days! What is the PowerUp Winter Warm-Up Challenge? It’s a school-wide 3-week challenge that will get students up and active throughout winter! The challenge will also encourage students to find creative ways to become active indoors or outdoors! For example, learn new skills such as cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating or playing at a PowerUp open gym. How the Challenge works: Each class will earn and track points

Saints Lose Round Two in Eagles' Nest

In the tenth game of the TCLGSAL season, our Saints made our second trip to Shakopee in ten days to take on Bloomington’s top squad. Due to sickness, injury, and travel, three key players from the Saints were unable to make it to the game on Friday. We knew that this was going to be one of the most challenging games of the entire basketball season, regardless of the circumstances. From the opening tip until the final buzzer resonated throughout the Eagles’ Nest, the high energy and effort level of our Saints never wavered. Assistant coach Neal Anderson and I were very pleased with the way our kids went about their business, focusing only on the aspects of the game they could control. Even though we could not help the circumstances or the opponent, our Saints that were present at the game used this opportunity to make the most out of their extended playing time. While it was a predictably difficult night of basketball ( final score: 8-43 ), the highlight of the night was sev

Important Parking Reminder!

With the temperatures being chilly this time of the year, we understand your urgency to quickly enter the building to come into school for office items or to drop off or pick up your children. However, we do ask that you review these procedures for the safety of everyone here at Salem. Before School Drop-off The driveway in front of the school is intended for  bus and car drop-off . The parking lots should be used for cars that will be parked for any length of time, whether attended or unattended. Please do  NOT   PARK and leave your vehicle  in the driveway in front of the school. If you think it may take some time and assistance for your child to exit the vehicle, please park in a parking lot and walk in with your children. We need to keep this drop-off and pick up lane moving as smoothly as possible. Also be mindful of the buses that will be dropping off children in the morning usually by 9-9:10 am so you do not block their access to the driveway. The upper driveway in front of

Saints Sneak by Berea and Top Good Shepherd in Home Doubleheader

Game #1 vs Berea:     In a unique doubleheader of basketball last Friday night, our Salem A Team took on Berea at 6:30pm and Good Shepherd at 8:30pm in our fifth and sixth conference games of the 2018-2019 season.     In our first game of the night against a much improved team from Berea Lutheran, our Saints jumped out to a nice early lead with a decent first half of basketball ( halftime score: 17-8 ). Little did we know at the time, every point of this halftime cushion proved to be extremely valuable in the final result of the game. Berea exhibited tremendous resilience in the second half by battling back to make the game a nail-biter. Our Saints allowed many bad habits from last year to creep in and haunt us in the final minutes of the game. Berea used their great hustle to force our Saints into making poor decisions that led to countless turnovers. Fortunately for the home crowd, eighth grader Griffin (14 points) iced the game away with two clutch free throws in the final minu

It would be greatly

Saints Victorious in Eagles’ Nest

Our Salem basketball families made the trek to Shakopee on Tuesday night as our Saints took on the Bloomington #2 Eagles. Our kids were very excited to finally get back on the basketball court in our first game of the new year!     Playing in our fifth straight away game, our Saints were impressively up for the challenge right from the opening tip. In the first half, our offensive execution was the best I have seen yet this season. All of our half court offensive plays are designed to create drive and dish opportunities at the basket. Due to our solid execution and improvisation within the plays, we were able to rack up the fouls on the Eagles, enabling our Saints to shoot a ton of free throws (21 TOTAL!). Three different players on the Saints attempted and made free throws in the first half, which allowed us to go into halftime with a nice cushion on the scoreboard ( halftime score: 24-11 ).     Death, taxes, and well-coached Bloomington teams. These three things are pretty
