October School News Tuition Assistance The last two Sundays in September were fundraising Sundays for our Tuition Assistance account for Salem Lutheran School. This fund helps families who cannot afford the tuition for various reasons. With the money we received last year, we were able to help 15 families send their children to Salem. If you would like to give to the tuition assistance fund, you can give your donations to either Debbie Swanson or Diane Light. Thanks for all of your help and support of your school. Scholarship Endowment Fund Last voter’s meeting, the congregation approved the start of a Scholarship Endowment Fund for tuition assistance. This fund will work hand in hand with the current fund to help families with tuition needs who want to send their kids to Salem. We are not getting rid of the current Tuition Assistance Fund at school but will need both as the endowment fund will take some time to grow. The School Board is working on a grant that we can use t

Salem Soccer - game #5 recap

Thursday's soccer game against the Christ Cougars was the last regular season competition for the Salem Saints. The Saints knew it would be a tough rematch, especially since Christ has a good mix of older and younger players.  Taking a short trip west, the Saints began their warm-up on Christ's home tilt. Gideon kept the mood light while noticing "heaven opened up" and the sun briefly shined through. That didn't last long though, as we felt a few raindrops later in the warm-up. We were blessed that there was no major rain and the Lord did not choose to return that afternoon, so the game went on. David showed solid goalkeeping in the first half of the game, with multiple saves early on.  Reese was once again key on the back end for the Saints, showing his leadership and direction for the defense. Our strong defensive play kept a fairly evenly game well into the first half.  Midway through the first half, a penalty kick resulted in the Cougars taking the lead.  Th

Social Opportunity for Salem Parents on Tuesday, October 2

Townie Tuesdays is hosting an event at Lift Bridge Brewery to help support Trout in the Classroom from the local Trout Unlimited chapter. Trout in the Classroom was a learning event we used for Science in the upper grades and we found it valuable to the students as well as the environment. Salem will be providing food for the event with all proceeds helping our tuition assistance fund. Trout Unlimited will receive $1 for every pint sold on Tuesday ,  October 2, from 5-8 p.m . There will also be some silent auction items available to bid on as well as hands-on fly casting where you can learn from the experts. This is an event mostly for adults, but there is root beer available for those who are underage or do not like the adult beverages at the brewery. We are hoping we have a great turn-out as well. Join us for a fun evening!

Salem Soccer - game #4 recap

After inclement weather canceled the game last Thursday, the Salem Saints soccer team returned to the field on Tuesday afternoon for a rematch against the Crown of Life Raiders. This time around the Saints were on the West St Paul turf.  The Saints had a small, but dedicated fanbase to start the game.  Those few fans got to see the Salem team get off to a speedy start!  Griffin was the first to score about 7 minutes into the game with a strong run down the field.  Never wavering, he took a solid shot putting the Saints into an early lead.  The Saints continued to play strong for much of the first half taking many shots, getting some closer and closer to on goal.  Finally 27 minutes into the game, Lars found the sweet spot and scored again for the Saints.  A handball by the Raiders in the box gave a penalty kick opportunity to Alexis in the final minutes of the first half.  Her reliable accuracy put the Saints up 3-0 at halftime.  The number of fans started growing as school and wor

Salem Outreach at Harvest Fest Oct. 13 & 14

Salem Outreach Opportunity Salem will be hosting the children's games at the Stillwater Harvest Fest October 13-14, from 10-6 both days.  We would like to have 2-3 people at each time slot to control the games and have the opportunity to share about Salem's ministry.  They provide all the games and candy, all we have to do is keep the games supervised and have a face in the community.  We will have 2-hour time slots so you will have plenty of time to explore the event yourself as well, plus Salem gets a stipend for volunteering to host this event.  Sign up in the church narthex on the weekend and school office during the week.  Thanks in advance! Also - Thank you to all who helped give school supplies for the beginning of the school year.  It helped us get off to a great start!

K-8 Art Adventure Program 2018-2019 Dear Salem Families, Salem is again participating in the Art Adventure Program through the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. The training is at the MIA on October 30 and 31 and November 1, from 10 am-12. Jennifer Bye and Elaine Kannas are both going on the 31st and would welcome carpooling with anyone if you would feel more comfortable getting to and from the museum as a group. There is also a training session on November 1 from 5-7 if the 31st does not work for you. You DO NOT have to have an extensive background in Ancient History or Art History to participate in this! Salem Soccer - game #3 recap

With the change of location for our "home" field, came a change in the Saints record.  The Christ Cougars proved to be our toughest opponents of the season during Tuesday's match-up.  The Saints took on the Cougars at a new, full-sized field, just down the road from Salem school.  It was a bit of a cloudy and cool day, but all significant rain was out of the forecast.  The Cougars came out quick and scored shortly after the game began, while the Saints were still getting acclimated and organized.  The Saints didn't let that unsettle them.  They battled back and Griffin took a nice run through the center of the field to score, creating a 1-1 tie.  David, as goalie, was once again making solid plays.  He even stopped a penalty kick (one-on-one shot opportunity) from Christ - what a BIG play!  More defensive action was seen from Reese, along with the defensive debut by Zander.  Both 8th graders have great legs to move that ball away from our net. Before the second half

Salem Soccer - game #2 recap

The Salem Saints Soccer team launched the first of a three-game home stint on Thursday against the Crown of Life Raiders.  The game had a late start due to miscommunication about the location, but eventually, the Raiders showed up to the home pitch behind Salem's school. Once again, the weather provided plenty of sunshine, this time for our fans to look into, and a stiff wind in our favor to start the game. The Saints took a bit to get used to the shorter field compared to Tuesday's game.  The smaller field appeared to be a benefit for the smaller stature of our opponents who were quick and all over the field.  It was obvious that stamina would not be an issue so accuracy and precision would become key factors in the game.  One highlight for the team, and probably the fans, was Griffin's FOUR consecutive headers!  The final header was a shot towards goal but it didn't get the right bounce to score.  I guess the headers were one way to keep the ball away from the young

Salem Soccer has "Kicked Off" - Game 1 recap

The Salem Saints Soccer team "kicked off" their season this past week.  After only two practices they were on the road to play their first game against Good Shepherd of Burnsville. Compared to last year's rainout, the weather was almost perfect for all our fans watching the game! While the Panthers had many more players compared to the Saints, the Saints had plenty of experience to bring to the game.  It was a back and forth battle for the first 30 minutes and the teams were 0-0 at halftime.  The halftime break was a much-welcomed respite by our Saints, as we only had one sub to rotate through.  With the warm weather and sunshine, Coach Collins was concerned if we would have enough stamina to make it through the second half.  Thankfully the players came out refreshed for the second half.  David, as the goalie, made some great saves and had huge kicks out for anything that made it through our strong defensive line led by Reese. The midfielders, a mix of 4th - 8th grader
