Salem Soccer - game #3 recap

With the change of location for our "home" field, came a change in the Saints record.  The Christ Cougars proved to be our toughest opponents of the season during Tuesday's match-up.  The Saints took on the Cougars at a new, full-sized field, just down the road from Salem school.  It was a bit of a cloudy and cool day, but all significant rain was out of the forecast.

The Cougars came out quick and scored shortly after the game began, while the Saints were still getting acclimated and organized.  The Saints didn't let that unsettle them.  They battled back and Griffin took a nice run through the center of the field to score, creating a 1-1 tie.  David, as goalie, was once again making solid plays.  He even stopped a penalty kick (one-on-one shot opportunity) from Christ - what a BIG play!  More defensive action was seen from Reese, along with the defensive debut by Zander.  Both 8th graders have great legs to move that ball away from our net. Before the second half was over, Christ tipped another goal off David's hands through the upper part of the net.  David wasn't quite tall enough to stop it but gave a valiant effort.  We went into halftime down 1-2, but feeling pretty good at how well the game was going.

Things became a little more dreary in the second half, as the Cougars punched in a few more goals and a light mist showered our fans. Zander, as goalie, made quite a few good saves, but eventually surrendered the position back to David.  A ray of sunshine for the Saints is the continued growth and great communication between our forwards.  On one of Noah's strong throw-ins, Alexis took the ball downfield and raised her scoring percentage!  Great dedication and defensive effort were also seen from Isaiah and our fourth grade Noah, who were both aggressive and not afraid of anyone from the opposing team.  Minor injuries plagued the team towards the end of the game, but thankfully everyone appears to be okay.  The Saints had many positive moments but lost 2-6.  Next up, Salem will host the Good Shepherd Panthers on Thursday, Sept 20th at the Old Athletic Field in Stillwater.  Let's go Saints!
