Basketball recap girls Bethany tournament

Girls Basketball Bethany Recap

This past weekend, the Salem Saints traveled to Bethany Lutheran college in Mankato for the Charger Classic. We knew our first game would be difficult, as we faced St. Paul’s New Ulm, who are historically a very tall team. The Saints debuted the 2-3 zone defense, but the length and height of our opponent caused us to fall short. It was not for lack of effort that the Saints were defeated 8-47. Hannah did a great job handling the pressure their guards were putting on her, and she remained calm to take care of the basketball, and help keep the team remain positive.

Our second opponent was Crown of Life, whom we faced earlier this year. The girls and I were excited get another shot at facing this opponent. We came out very strong in our 2-3 zone, and our zone offense, Buster. Sophie started the scoring off with a quick 3 pointer, but after that our shots just weren’t falling. The  Salem girls were seemingly doing everything right, working the offense and taking good shots. Emilie did an excellent job getting her shots off and playing textbook defense, making it difficult for Crown of Life’s posts to score on us. Avery continued to battle hard-driving to the hoop, and taking a good shot selection, while Meade battled for rebounds and jump balls. Overall, I was so proud of how our girls played-it was probably one of our best, if not, our best game yet this year. Our final score was 7-42, however, the score would have been so much closer if we could get our shots to fall.

This week will be a busy week for our Salem Saints. With practice Tuesday/Wednesday and a scrimmage against St. Croix middle school Thursday, and a scrimmage against Belle Plaine on Friday, we will continue to prepare and improve for the upcoming games. It is amazing the energy the Salem girls bring to every practice, scrimmage, and game. We are hopeful to pull off our first win this week.
