Basketball boys recap game #7

Saints Battle Hard in Road Loss at King of Grace
On Friday, the basketball families of Salem braved the brisk winter air as everyone traveled to King of Grace Lutheran School in Golden Valley. In the Saints first regular season game of 2018, we were blessed with the opportunity to compete against an experienced and very well-coached Knights team. Since this was our first game in three weeks, it would be normal to expect a sloppy performance from our young team. However, much to the surprise and delight of the coaches, our Salem Saints executed the offensive sets very well.
Right from the outset, King of Grace came out with their usual full court pressure defense. Every year, they do a tremendous job of using their great length and athleticism to anticipate and intercept the passes of their opponents. This was exactly the case during the early stages of Friday’s game. Even though we committed several turnovers, most of them resulted from the sheer speed, strength, and size advantage the Knights possessed. Throughout this season, I have continually reminded our boys to only worry about the aspects of basketball that we can control. In this game, our Salem Saints played like a team without any worries. The aggressive manner in which our boys competed made me a very proud couch.
Even though the Knights prevailed over the Saints (final score: 19-43), a couple Salem boys need to be recognized for their incredible effort. Seventh grader David put on a gritty post performance that was easily his best game yet this season. He battled inside all night long against physically skilled post players that were twice his size! David did so many gritty, selfless things that do not show up in the box score, such as offensive post seals that led to layups, solid box-outs that led to rebounds, and great defensive help in the middle of our zone! Third grader (yes, THIRD grader!) Gideon always plays with a fearless determination that needs to be highlighted. On Friday, Gideon used his non stop hustle to sneak up behind an eighth grader and steal the ball from him! He plays the game of basketball with a competitive passion that is unmatched. His steal on Friday was my favorite part of a fun night of Salem hoops!
Our boys will be back to work in practice this week as we prepare to take on Berea at home on Friday!
