Boys Basketball recap game #8
Salem Boys Notch First Victory of 2017-2018 Season
Last Friday evening, our Salem Saints took on Berea Lutheran School in our eighth conference game of the regular season. In my three seasons of coaching, this was the first year we have had the opportunity to play against Berea. It is awesome to see that such a small school has the incredible commitment to support a basketball team!
In the battle of young basketball teams, our Saints came out of the gate like a team hungry for their first win. During the first ten minutes of the game, our boys executed the offensive plays with high efficiency, which propelled us to an early 17-3 lead. However, from the last few minutes of the first half until the final buzzer sounded, Berea consistently knocked down perimeter jump shots that allowed them to outscore our Saints by an eight point margin. Although this game was not one of our cleaner performances of the season, our guards handled Berea’s late-game full court press with poise, enabling our Salem Saints to hold on for our first victory of the regular season (final score: 32-26). Seventh grader Griffin continues to lead this team by example, as he turned in a season high 23 points (75% free throw percentage).
Friday’s victory was a nice transition into a fun weekend of basketball, as our Salem basketball teams competed in the Charger Classic at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. As this young team keeps improving, our win on Friday will hopefully be remembered as the first step in the process of achieving many victories in the upcoming years!
Next week, Salem has a busy and exciting week of basketball! We have practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, a scrimmage at home against St. Croix Middle School on Thursday, and a conference game at Belle Plaine on Friday. Salem hoops is headed in the right direction!
