November School News

MAP Testing

Salem went through its seasonal MAP testing at the beginning of October. The students were tested on Math, Reading, and Language. The testing is a way for teachers to see where the students are at and how we can better assist them with their learning.

Teacher’s Conference

The faculty of Salem attended the Minnesota State Teacher’s Conference in October and were able to see many different sectionals about teaching. We had time to reconnect with classmates and other teachers from the area as well as learn best practices for helping our students learn to their fullest potential.

Reformation Learning is Fun

The entire school had fun on Oct. 31 learning about Martin Luther while doing various Reformation activities. The students frosted cookies with the Luther Seal on them. They learned what all of the different parts of the seal mean. They built a Wartburg Castle and learned how Martin Luther hid there from those who wanted him dead. They also got the opportunity to "find" Martin Luther who was hidden in the classroom and were challenged to make the Luther Seal out of legos. The students went from classroom to classroom with a mixture of grades Preschool - 8th grade. The cooperation across grade levels and the great interaction among the students were awesome to experience! We are hoping to have other activities throughout the year where the students get to interact and be in those groups again.

One Quarter in the Books

The first quarter has come and gone at Salem. Much learning has been happening in the classrooms, and it is time to report it to the students' parents. We are excited to finish out the last three quarters of the school year.

Parent Teachers Conference

The teachers will be meeting with the parents throughout the week of November 5th. The parents and teachers will be able to continue to work together to make sure the students are off to a good start of the year and make accommodations for those who may need a little extra help or challenge. K-4 Parents should sign up for a time on our School News Blog. Parents of 5-8 grade should arrive during our conference times but do not need to sign up for a specific time. Conference times are November 7th & 8th from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm, and November 9th from 8:00 am - 9:00 am.

Walk for Diabetes

The students will be doing a walk for diabetes at the beginning of November. They will be raising money for the physical activity their teacher will be having them do on November 2nd. We are hoping to raise awareness and help the students understand how diabetes affects the body. Thea Kogler came in and gave a presentation on diabetes and what it does to the body. Her daughter is in our 3rd-grade class and has diabetes, which gives the children a good reason to raise money for this cause.

Vision Screening

The 1st, 3rd and 5th-grade students will be screened by the nurse for their vision on November 6. This will help those students continue to learn to the best of their ability. It is hard to learn and focus when you can’t see clearly what is going on. We hope that by having this at school many children will be able to find out that they need glasses to help them with their education. Please contact your child's teacher if they are not scheduled for a screening but you would like to have them included.

Sports Update

Soccer and Volleyball have officially wrapped up their seasons. Soccer lost to Good Shepherd in the quarterfinals and our volleyball team took 4th in the B-team tournament. A big thank you to our coaches Rachel Collins for soccer and Jessica Klatt for volleyball.

Ross Collins coached Cross Country again this year. We had four participants, Reese Collins, Griffon Paulsen, Sophia Enter, and Isaac Goplin, who ran well at the track meet. Griffon took 3rd in his heat, followed closely by Reese who took 4th. A big thank you to Ross Collins for coaching the team.

Basketball practice started the week after Teacher’s Conference. The students have been hard learning the plays and getting ready for the season. We are having a Boy’s A-team and a Girl’s B-team this year for Salem. The A-team will be coached by Travis Koester and Neal Anderson. The Girl’s B-team will be coached by Alex and Tessa Anderson. We look forward to a great season of basketball!

Ways to Help Our School

We are still collecting Boxtops for Education and aluminum cans. Please remember to check the date on the Boxtops for Education as they do expire. These can be placed in the bin at the school door entrance. Aluminum cans can be bagged up and placed in the wooden bin that is next to the garage on our property.  We are no longer collecting ink jet cartridges!

SCRIP Orders

We are enhancing our current SCRIP program to allow you to order your SCRIP on your own if you choose.  We will still do regular orders on the 2nd & 4th Monday mornings, but, now you have the option to place your own order online.  The other change will be a flat 5% fee for shipping on all orders.  This will cover the shipping and administrative fees involved in the orders.  For example, if you earn $5.00 from your order, Salem will keep $.25 to cover any costs. We are also offering to apply your profits to your child's lunch account as well as tuition.  We are also adding an option to direct your profits to church.  We are excited about the changes and hope you are as well.  Contact any SPTO member or the church office for more information.

Prayer

One way we usually forget about how we can help our school and church is to pray for them throughout the year. Your prayers are always a blessing and it is great to know that you are asking God for his blessings on our school year.
