February Salem School News
COVID School Year
Salem continues to have a few instances of COVID affecting our students and staff. We had one of our lunch personnel be exposed to COVID right after break. Thankfully they did not serve or prepare any food, so we didn’t have to worry about it spreading. We have only had a couple of students have to quarantine due to exposure from their parents. We continue to have no spreading between children in classrooms.
Registration for Preschool Next School Year
The time is here already to register your child for preschool. A re- enrollment email came out the week of January 4th for those currently enrolled. If you are currently enrolled at Salem School or a member at Salem you can register and reserve your spot for the 2021-2022 school year. We will have 3 classes available; 3 year olds, mixed age, and 4 and 5 year olds not yet ready for kindergarten. We reserve the right to place your child in the classroom that best meets your child’s educational needs and our staffing. Our mixed age and 4 and 5 year old class is filling up!
Registration fees are $100 for the early bird until March 1st, then the fee is $175. Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. You have the choice of which days you would like your child to come. There is a minimum attendance of 3 half days up to 5 full days. The cost is $20 for half day, $30 for full days. Tours will be scheduled individually for those interested. We will conduct them out of school hours to minimize exposure of others to our students. If you have any questions you can call 651-439-7831 and talk to Jane Grobe. If you know of any 2-4 year olds looking for a preschool, please refer them to our website salemlutheran.org for registration information and for requesting a tour. We open enrollment on February 1st for all remaining spots in our classrooms. You get the first option for spots available. Remember, word of mouth is our best advertisement.
Registration for K-8 Next School Year
Returning school families’ enrollment opened for the 2021-2022 school year on January 4th. This enrollment is open to any current students and their siblings. Salem member families may also enroll at this time. Look for a re-enrollment email from TADS that came the first week back from break. Contact the school office if you need it sent to you again. Salem members new to our school may enroll directly on our school website. K-8 registration fee is $175 before March 1st and $275 after. New families may begin enrolling on February 1st. Contact the school office if you have any questions.
St. Croix Joint Ministry with Salem
We are in the early stages of discussions with St. Croix Lutheran Academy (SCLA) to consider ideas to partner with our educational ministries. SCLA operates a vibrant 6th to 12th grade school in West St. Paul. We operate a vibrant Pre-K to 8th grade school. The idea is to see if these two ministries could be combined in some manner to provide an even better educational ministry that would reach a greater number of students and families. If you would like more information about this please visit salemlutheran.org/stcroix.
Sports Update
Basketball resumed in January. Players are now required to wear masks during practices and games, which caused our Girl’s B-team to not have enough players. We combined the girl’s who wanted to play with the Boy’s B-team, and now have two co-ed teams playing in the boys division.
Free Hot Lunches Continue in the New Year
We have been notified that the MDE Covid Lunch Program we are participating in has been extended beyond December 31st. However, cold lunch milk, extra milks, and snack milks will continue to be charged .40 per milk. One milk is included with the free hot lunch. We will keep you informed of the date this program may end. We are grateful we can continue to offer this blessing to our families!
MAP Testing
MAP testing was conducted at the end of January and the teachers are able to use the scores to track growth in the student’s learning and to see what the students are now ready to learn in certain subject areas.
2nd Semester Mission
Our first semester mission offerings totaled just over $1860.00 and is being sent to One Team Africa. Thank you to all of the families that contributed to our chapel mission collection so generously. Our second quarter chapel contributions will be collected to support the congregation of Holy Scriptures Church in Midland,MI. This church is recovering from massive flooding destruction that occurred last May. More information can be obtained at this link https://wels.net/christian-aid-and-relief-assists-in-midland/.

Referral Program
The School Board approved a program that gives an incentive to recruiting new families for our school. If a family who has children enrolled refers a new family to Salem, they will receive a $200 tuition credit at Christmas per family they have referred. A church family who refers a new family will receive a $200 script gift card also at Christmas per family if they so choose. There is no limit to the amount of families you can refer. If you have any more questions about the program, speak to a School Board member or Mr. Klatt.
No More Clipping Boxtops
Boxtops has come up with a more technological way to earn money for Salem Lutheran School. Instead of clipping the box tops and sending them in, you can now scan your receipt through the app on your phone and the points will be awarded to your school. The website to sign up on is https://www.boxtops4education.com or you can download the Box Tops for Education app on your phone.
Thanks to all who have been collecting these labels for us over the years! Boxtops will still honor any non-expired labels you may still see on their products. However, these will be phased out over time as the new products will not have the old label and scanning the receipt will eventually be the only way to collect points for our school. Bring in any non-expired labels you find. Our school can still get credit for these!
We Are Also Collecting Aluminum Cans
Aluminum cans benefit our athletic program and can be bagged up and placed in the wooden bin that is next to the garage on our property. Thanks for helping our school!
SCRIP
Have you checked out the ShopWithSCRIP.com website? You can now order your own SCRIP any time, anywhere you need it. You can also now order with your credit card! All you have to do is login and sign up! If you have students at Salem, the rebates earned can be applied to your child’s tuition. There will be a flat 5% fee on all orders. This will cover the shipping and administrative fees involved in the orders. You can also apply your profits to your child's lunch account as well as tuition. We have also added an option to direct your profits to church. Contact the church office for more information.
Prayer
One way we usually forget about how we can help our school and church is to pray for them throughout the year. Your prayers are always a blessing and it is great to know that you are asking God for his blessings in our school year.
