January Salem School News

COVID School Year

Salem continues to work through the school year with COVID peaking out its head every once in a while. The most recent was a staff member that tested positive who worked closely with students from many grades. The students and staff member were quarantined and due to the MDH guideline change to follow the new CDC quarantine guidelines, many students were able to come back to school quicker than under the previous guidelines.

Registration for Preschool Next School Year

The time is here already to register your child for preschool. A re-enrollment email will come out the week of January 4th for those currently enrolled. If you are currently enrolled at Salem School or a member at Salem you can register and reserve your spot for the 2021-2022 school year. We will have 3 classes available; 3 year olds, mixed age, and 4 and 5 year olds not yet ready for kindergarten. We reserve the right to place your child in the classroom that best meets your child’s educational needs and our staffing.

Registration fees are $100 for the early bird until March 1st, then the fee is $175. Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. You have the choice of which days you would like your child to come. There is a minimum attendance of 3 half days up to 5 full days. The annual tuition cost is based on $20 for half days, $30 for full days.

Tours will be scheduled individually for those interested. We will conduct them out of school hours to minimize exposure of others to our students. If you have any questions you can call 651-439-7831 and talk to Jane Grobe. If you know of any 2-4 year olds looking for a preschool, please refer them to our website salemlutheran.org for registration information and for requesting a tour. We open enrollment on February 1st for all remaining spots in our classrooms. You get the first option for spots available. Remember, word of mouth is our best advertisement.

Registration for K-8 Next School Year

Returning school families’ enrollment will open for the 2021-2022 school year on January 4th. This enrollment is open to any current students and their siblings. Salem member families may also enroll at this time. Look for a re-enrollment email from TADS that first week back from break to make your re-enrollment process easier. Salem members new to our school may enroll directly on our school website. K-8 registration fee is $175 before March 1st and $275 after. New families may begin enrolling on February 1st.

Christmas Charity Giving - Logan Loves

Salem families had the opportunity to give gifts to the Logan Loves organization. This group is run by a family whose twins attend St. Croix. They were born with some health concerns and one has needed a few heart transplants in his young life. This organization gives gifts to families who have to stay in the hospital over Christmas. We want to try and bring some joy and happiness to them, when they may be feeling down and discouraged.

Sports Update

The basketball season has been paused due to the Governor’s restrictions on youth sports. This does not allow our students to practice or play basketball games until we come back from Christmas Break. The School Board will see what the restrictions are at that time as well as assess the COVID situation in our area to see how Salem will return to basketball in January.

February Academic Calendar Change

We are looking ahead to a school calendar change that you should be aware of for February. We WILL have school on Friday, February 19th. We will NOT have school on Friday, February 12th. This will be a teacher in-service day. Please make this change to your calendars as you look ahead to your plans for February. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Contact your child’s teacher if you have any concerns.

Free Hot Lunches Continue in the New Year

We have been notified that the MDE Covid Lunch Program we are participating in has been extended beyond December 31st. However, cold lunch milk, extra milks, and snack milks will continue to be charged .40 per milk. One milk is included with the free hot lunch. We will keep you informed of the date this program may end. We are grateful we can continue to offer this blessing to our families!

MAP Testing

Our winter round of MAP testing will begin at the end of January. The students will take three tests to see how much they have grown from the beginning of the school year in math, reading, and language skills. This is one of the ways the teachers assess how the students are learning and growing throughout the year. Please make sure your child has no appointments scheduled so their testing is not interrupted. Thank you!

Referral Program

The School Board approved a program that gives an incentive to recruiting new families for our school. If a family who has children enrolled refers a new family to Salem, they will receive a $200 tuition credit at Christmas per family they have referred. A church family who refers a new family will receive a $200 script gift card also at Christmas per family if they so choose. There is no limit to the amount of families you can refer. If you have any more questions about the program, speak to a School Board member or Mr. Klatt.

No More Clipping Boxtops

Instead of clipping the box tops and sending them in, you can now scan your receipt through the app on your phone and the points will be awarded to your school. The website to sign up on is https://www.boxtops4education.com or you can download the Box Tops for Education app on your phone.

Thanks to all who have been collecting these labels for us over the years! Boxtops will still honor any non-expired labels you may still see on their products. However, these will be phased out over time as the new products will not have the old label and scanning the receipt will eventually be the only way to collect points for our school. Bring in any non-expired labels you find. Our school can still get credit for these!

We Are Also Collecting Aluminum Cans

Aluminum cans benefit our athletic program and can be bagged up and placed in the wooden bin that is next to the garage on our property. Thanks for helping our school!

SCRIP

Have you checked out the ShopWithSCRIP.com website? You can now order your own SCRIP any time, anywhere you need it. You can also now order with your credit card! All you have to do is login and sign up! If you have students at Salem, the rebates earned can be applied to your child’s tuition. There will be a flat 5% fee on all orders. This will cover the shipping and administrative fees involved in the orders. You can also apply your profits to your child's lunch account as well as tuition. We have also added an option to direct your profits to church. Contact the church office for more information.

Prayer

One way we usually forget about how we can help our school and church is to pray for them throughout the year. Your prayers are always a blessing and it is great to know that you are asking God for his blessings in our school year.
