SCHOOL NEWS

COVID Update

Salem has had a relatively successful start to the school year. We have had only a couple of COVID issues, one affecting a classroom in our school. We continue to follow the protocols outlined in our Back to School Policy and work with parents to ensure that students who are sick are staying home so as to not spread an infection at school.

St. Croix Joint Ministry with Salem

A one page document has been shared with the church and school about the St. Croix Joint Ministry opportunity. If you would like a link to the update, please contact Mr. Klatt at rklatt@salemlutheran.org. Mr. Todd Russ and Nate Kallies will also be at our next congregational meeting to answer questions and share St. Croix’s vision of the Joint Ministry alongside Salem’s vision.

Sports Update

Fall sports are in full swing. Soccer was unfortunately not able to have a team, due to a lack of student participants, but those who wanted to are still practicing together. Thank you to Miss Kostrezewa for heading up the soccer practices for Salem.

Disc Golf is going strong and both of our A-teams tied for 4th place in the first meet of the season. A thank you to Jonny Ransom for coaching the Disc Golf teams this year.

Volleyball is going strong at Salem as well under the coaching of Thomas and Allison Stob. The girls played Crown of Life and won all three games in their match. We look forward to seeing how the rest of the season goes.

Finally, Cross Country is in full swing with Mrs. Klatt as the coach again. They have been running around outside in the beautiful weather and getting in shape to run their 1 mile (or more). We look forward to seeing how their meets go later in October.

Grandparents Day

Due to the amount of Grandparents we would have at Salem, Grandparents day was postponed until the Spring. We are hoping to be able to have an event or something for the grandparents to come to Salem and enjoy time with their grandchildren. More information will come out later in the year about this event.

MAP Testing

MAP testing happened the last week of September. This is the chance for the students to see how they rank nationally and to help the teachers have a glimpse of where the students are academically. The goal is to have each student continuing growing throughout their education at Salem.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

A sign-up came out in late September for Parent-Teacher Conferences. Conferences will be on October 5th (Gr K-4 only), 7th, 11th and 12th (Gr 5-8 only). Please make sure to sign up for a time slot with your child’s teacher. We will share with you progress for the first quarter as well as your student’s MAP testing scores. We have these conferences in early October, so students can adjust their grades, behaviors, etc. before the first quarter ends. Please sign up using this link https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C054AAEAC29A0FD0-2021

Caps for Kids Day

October 20th is Caps for Kids Day at Salem. Students can bring $1 to school to allow them to wear a hat in school. All money collected benefits children who are battling cancer.

No School October 21st-22nd: Teacher Conference

There will be no school on October 21-22 as the teachers will be attending the annual teacher’s conference put on by the Minnesota District.

Referral Program

The School Board approved a program that gives an incentive to recruiting new families for our school. If a family who has children enrolled refers a new family to Salem, they will receive a $200 tuition credit at Christmas per family they have referred. A church family who refers a new family will receive a $200 script gift card also at Christmas per family if they so choose. There is no limit to the number of families you can refer. If you have any more questions about the program, speak to a School Board member or Mr. Klatt.

No More Clipping Box Tops

Boxtops has come up with a more technological way to earn money for Salem Lutheran School. Instead of clipping the box tops and sending them in, you can now scan your receipt through the app on your phone and the points will be awarded to your school. The website to sign up on is https://www.boxtops4education.com or you can download the Box Tops for Education app on your phone. Thanks to all who have been collecting these labels for us over the years! Boxtops will still honor any non-expired labels you may still see on their products. However, these will be phased out over time as the new products will not have the old label, and scanning the receipt will eventually be the only way to collect points for our school. Bring in any non-expired labels you find. Our school can still get credit for these!

We Are Also Collecting Aluminum Cans

Aluminum cans benefit our athletic program and can be bagged up and placed in the wooden bin that is next to the garage facing Panama Ave. on our property. Thanks for helping our school!

SCRIP

Have you checked out the ShopWithSCRIP.com website? You can now order your own SCRIP any time, anywhere you need it. You can also now order with your credit card! All you have to do is login and sign up! If you have students at Salem, the rebates earned can be applied to your child’s tuition. There will be a flat 5% fee on all orders. This will cover the shipping and administrative fees involved in the orders. You can also apply your profits to your child's lunch account as well as tuition. We have also added an option to direct your profits to church. Contact the church office for more information.

Prayer

One way we usually forget about how we can help our school and church is to pray for them throughout the year. Your prayers are always a blessing and it is great to know that you are asking God for his blessings in our school year.
