April Salem School News

COVID School Year

Salem continues to have no instances of COVID in its halls. We are thankful for parents and families keeping their children home when sick and allowing us to continue to not have our school year interrupted by exposures.

Staff Changes for 2021-2022 School Year

Mr. Scharf has decided to retire at the end of this current school year. We are very sad to see him go but are so thankful for the years of service he has served here at Salem.

Mrs. Hasselquist is also transitioning to a part-time role next year and is helping us as we split 3rd and 4th grade for the morning. We are glad she will still be with us to teach your children and also share God's love with them.

Call Meeting Held

Since we are in need of two teachers for next school year, Salem Lutheran Church held a call meeting on March 21st. Members of the church decided who to call for the upcoming school year. Please join us as we pray for the two individuals that will be deliberating their current teaching call along with the call we have extended to them to serve at Salem Lutheran.

Mr. Paul Schulz currently serves at St. John Lutheran School in Manitowoc, WI, and is being called to serve in our 5-8th grade classrooms.

Mrs. Naomi Getka currently serves at Faith Lutheran School in Tacoma, WA, and is being called to serve full-time in our 3rd and 4th-grade classroom along with Mrs. Hasselquist who will continue to serve us in a part-time capacity.

We are praying for the Lord’s guidance and direction as we continue to prepare for the staffing needs in our classrooms for the 2021-2022 school year. Please continue to pray for all of us here and for Mr. Schulz and Mrs. Getka as they consider the call to serve with us here at Salem.

SPTO News

Our Salem Parent Teacher Organization planned a very fun Spring Easter Event for our PK-2nd grade students and their parents on March 20th. Approximately 60 children participated with their parents that day. Many were very appreciative to get to know and visit with their child’s classmates as well as fellow classroom parents in a safe way as we still try to navigate through Covid. Thank you especially to Julie Ross and Tina Thompson who planned the event and to all the SPTO parents and volunteers who helped make this such a great experience for everyone who came.

SPTO is planning a meeting for April 15th at 6:30 pm to vote on a new executive committee. Please come join us in this planning event.

Sports Update

Bowling started their season on March 22nd. As of writing this article, we still don’t have word on when matches will be happening, but practices will continue through the month of April into the month of May if need be. We have 14 students in 5th-8th grade participating this school year.

Track practices will begin starting April 6th. Mr. and Mrs. Klatt along with Miss Kostrzewa will be helping the students work through the different events so they can decide what their events will be for track or field. We are excited for the track meet on May 7th and are excited to see all of the gifts God has blessed our students with.

8th Grade Raising Funds

The 8th Grade Class is raising funds for their upcoming class trip at the end of the school year. They are selling Heggies Pizzas and Rose Floral punch cards. For more information contact an 8th grader or their parents. Order information is also in the school office.

St. Croix Joint Ministry with Salem

An update will be coming from the steering committee in early April. This update will share what the committee has learned from our talks with St. Croix and a recommendation from the committee to the voters at the upcoming voter’s meeting in April.

Referral Program

The School Board approved a program that gives an incentive to recruiting new families for our school. If a family who has children enrolled refers a new family to Salem, they will receive a $200 tuition credit at Christmas per family they have referred. A church family who refers a new family will receive a $200 script gift card also at Christmas per family if they so choose. There is no limit to the number of families you can refer. If you have any more questions about the program, speak to a School Board member or Mr. Klatt.

No More Clipping Boxtops

Boxtops has come up with a more technological way to earn money for Salem Lutheran School. Instead of clipping the box tops and sending them in, you can now scan your receipt through the app on your phone and the points will be awarded to your school. The website to sign up on is https://www.boxtops4education.com or you can download the Box Tops for Education app on your phone.

Thanks to all who have been collecting these labels for us over the years! Boxtops will still honor any non-expired labels you may still see on their products. However, these will be phased out over time as the new products will not have the old label, and scanning the receipt will eventually be the only way to collect points for our school. Bring in any non-expired labels you find. Our school can still get credit for these!

We Are Also Collecting Aluminum Cans Aluminum cans benefit our athletic program and can be bagged up and placed in the wooden bin that is next to the garage facing Panama Ave. on our property. Thanks for helping our school!

SCRIP

Have you checked out the ShopWithSCRIP.com website? You can now order your own SCRIP any time, anywhere you need it. You can also now order with your credit card! All you have to do is login and sign up! If you have students at Salem, the rebates earned can be applied to your child’s tuition. There will be a flat 5% fee on all orders. This will cover the shipping and administrative fees involved in the orders. You can also apply your profits to your child's lunch account as well as tuition. We have also added an option to direct your profits to church. Contact the church office for more information.

Prayer

One way we usually forget about how we can help our school and church is to pray for them throughout the year. Your prayers are always a blessing and it is great to know that you are asking God for his blessings in our school year.
