Literacy News - Beignets?

Do you know what a beignet is? Would you like to know more? During Literacy Night at Salem, the two books, The Runaway Beignet and Fry ‘Em Up, Fry ‘Em Up Beignet will be read. There will also be projects to go along with the books. Please join us on March 5th at 6pm!

Youth Rally Meeting Tonight

8th Grade Parents! If your 8th grader is interested in the Youth Rally this summer, there is an informational meeting in the lunchroom at 6:00pm tonight.

Final Round of MLC Meet Math is History!

Our middle school students recently finished the final round of the Martin Luther College Meet Math competition. Students worked on six competition level math problems. You can see our school and individual student results and rankings by visiting https://meetmath.mlc-wels.edu/results/view . Our Salem fifth and sixth-grade students are in the B-5 category, and our seventh and eighth-grade students are in the A-6 category. Categories are determined by school size. Meet Math is a service club at Martin Luther College that provides mathematics contests for students in grades 5-12 who are enrolled in WELS or ELS schools. This club also maintains school and individual statistics that are the basis for various awards presented at the end of the school year. Literacy Night News - Fairy Tale Mad Libs

Nancy Loewen is coming to spend the evening with us. She grew up on a farm north of Mountain Lake, Minnesota, surrounded by library books and cats. She has published more than 140 books for children and young adults. The LAST Day of Kindergarten and Four to the Pole (co-authored with polar explorer Ann Bancroft) were Minnesota Book Award finalists. Her speaking/workshop credits include schools in the Southwest-West Central Service Cooperative; Rochester’s Young Author, Young Artist conference; Mankato’s Young Writers, Young Artists conference; featured speaker in the Celebration of Learning in Independence, MO; and many others. She lives in St. Paul and holds an MFA from Hamline University. In addition to writing, she teaches at Hennepin Technical College and tutor students taking the ACT. March School News

Referral Program The School Board approved a program that gives an incentive for recruiting new families for our school. If a family who has children enrolled refers a new family to Salem, they will receive a $200 tuition credit at Christmas per family they have referred. A church family who refers a new family will receive a $200 script gift card also at Christmas per family if they so choose. There is no limit to the number of families you can refer. If you have any more questions about the program, speak to a School Board member or Mr. Klatt. Registration for Next School Year Returning school families’ enrollment was open for the 2020-2021 school year on January 6th. Registration fees for next year are as follows: Preschool’s registration fee is $100 before March 1st and $175 after. K-8 registration fee is $175 before March 1st and $275 after. 5th-8th grade Bowling 2020

Salem Lutheran will once again offer bowling for boys and girls in grades 5th-8th this spring.  The season takes place from the end of March through the end of May.  Practices are at the Stillwater Bowling alley on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45pm-5:00pm.  Matches are held on Fridays or Saturdays across the Twin Cities Metro Area.    If you are interested in participating please let either Mrs. Klatt or Mrs. Hansen know soon.  Also if you are interested in coaching bowling this year contact Mrs. Klatt or Mrs. Hansen.   More detailed information will come at a later date about the season.

Twin Cities Fine Arts Form Due Tomorrow!

Dear Salem Parents, Our 5 - 8th-grade students (also 4th-grade Jubilate students) are invited to participate in the 2019-2020 Twin Cities Fine Arts Festival on April 18. This event takes place at St. Croix Lutheran Academy in West St. Paul and is a full day of music and art with a concert at 4:00 pm to end the day. Please talk with your student about how they would like to participate. Ms. Gosch, Mrs. Ronning, and Mrs. Balk will help with any music selections. Adult Night Out Donations Needed

SPTO is asking anyone interested in donating gift cards or money to SPTO for the March 20th fundraising event (raising funds for the bleachers) to please bring them to the school office. Gift cards will be used in the raffles, as prizes or to buy supplies. Thank you so much for any gifts you can give to make this a fun event.

March 5th is Literacy Night at Salem. One of the many events planned for the evening is Storytelling by grades 5-8. Come find out what the 5th - 8th grade has prepared for this special night!

Messy Monday February 24

Our next Messy Monday will be held on February 24 from 5 to 6 pm at Salem. Please enter through the school entrance. All families with children ages 2-5 are welcome to attend. Families will be charged $5 per child that attends and an activity or craft will be planned for the event. If you know of someone who is looking for a preschool or kindergarten for next year, please invite them! This is a wonderful opportunity to have them see our school and meet our awesome teachers. Future dates planned are March 23 and April 20.

Please Help SPTO February 26

SPTO is serving the Lenten meal at 5:00 pm on Feb 26th. Olive Garden is donating pasta. We are asking families to bring in soups and desserts. Also, anyone able to assist with serving and clean up would be greatly appreciated.

Plan for an Adult Night Out!

We are excited about our 2nd Annual Adult Night Out Event sponsored by SPTO Join us this year for our fiesta themed fundraiser on March 20th from 6-9pm in the Salem gym. There will be food (taco bar), bingo, bean bag toss, raffles, wine pull, a cookie baking contest and more. Tickets are $10. All proceeds will go for the Salem bleacher fund.

Literacy Night News - The Science of Reading

On March 5th , we will have Robin B. Rovick as a guest speaker at Salem. She will talk about “The Science of Reading - How to Help Your Child Read.” Robin is a knowledgeable and creative educator with over thirty years of experience in nurturing and building the skills of learners of all ages, dealing with language-based disabilities. She served on the board of the IDA-UMB (International Dyslexia Association) organization, where she has answered hundreds of calls and referral requests from teachers and parents looking for solid information about dyslexia and struggling readers. She provides remediation and advocacy work through her private practice at MultiSensory Reading Solutions, LLC. Robin is one of four Certified Academic Language Therapists in Minnesota, is a Wilson Reading Practitioner and a Reading Ally Specialist, as well as being IDA nationally certified. Literacy Night News - Valley Bookseller!

March 5th is Literacy Night at Salem. Valley Bookseller will be here from 6-7:30 pm. 20% of the sales they make will come back to Salem. We will use this money to purchase books for some of the classrooms. Keep watching for more news on this special event and plan to bring the whole family!

SPTO Meeting Moved to Wednesday, February 19

SPTO meeting for February 20th has been changed to Wednesday, February 19th in the lunchroom after school at 3:45 pm. This weekend our A-Team Girls will be playing in their League tournament at St. Croix Lutheran Academy. Please stop in the school office for a schedule or request one by email to watch and cheer them on! Feb. 14 - 16 our A-Team Girls will be headed to New Ulm, MN to compete in the annual Martin Luther College tournament. We will celebrate the week with some fun to get them energized for their games. The whole school is encouraged to participate! Please note there is no school on February 14th and February 17th.
