Safety Drills

Dear Parents,

We wanted to make you aware of the safety drills that we participate in for the safety of our students and staff at Salem. Your student may mention these so we wanted to make you aware of them as well.

We will be participating in 2 different types of lockdown drills with your children. The first type of lockdown is called a Lockdown with Warning. This would be used if there is a threat outside of the building. We would remain in our classroom with the doors locked, blinds pulled and no outdoor play with minimal travel in the halls especially by the main doors. We would continue with our schedule as planned without outside movement.  If it would be at the end of the day, we would keep your children safe here at school and not release them until the threat was gone. We would communicate this with parents through email or phone call as needed.

The second kind of lockdown drill is a Lockdown with Intruder. We have set protocols to follow which include locking our classroom doors, and staying out of sight until the all clear is given by police personnel. This one is a little harder to carry out as we hide and stay quiet. Each classroom has an individual plan for keeping our children safe until we can get out of the building. We do have security doors so this is a reduced threat. We still want to practice to be prepared in all situations, just like we practice fire and tornado drills. We do not want to raise fear in the minds of our younger children so we let them know it is like a game of hide and seek where we have to be very secretive.

It is hard to imagine the need for these drills but it is always good to be proactive and be prepared than the alternative. Keep Salem and all schools in your prayers that these drills will never have to be put into practice with a real threat. If you have any questions, you can ask for details from your child's teacher concerning these drills. Thank you for your support and prayers.
